Sanuki Beef Egg Udon @ Tamoya Udon & Tempura

As what the restaurant name states, they must be specializing in udon and tempura items. We tried the first item listed on their menu, Sanuki Beef Egg Udon, and here is what we have reviewed.

The open kitchen layout allowed us to see how they prepare their food, and the process looks really simple; blacnh noodles, add soup, add prepared beef slices, add prepared poached egg, add seaweed and other garnishes, serve. Way faster than fast food joints.

So, what is Sanuki udon? Well, what we found out is that "Sanuki udon (讃岐うどん) has been the type of udon noodle most popular in the Kagawa prefecture in Japan, but is now easily found throughout the neighboring Kansai region and much of Japan. It is characterized by its square shape and flat edges with rather chewy texture, and in authentic sense, ingredients should be from among those local specialties as wheat flour." Good to know ^^.

The noodles were cooked nicely and chewy. Beef slices were tender and proportionately given. Onsen egg was nicely poached, not overly cooked or under cooked.

The broth was sweet and slightly too salty for our liking. The crispy tempura bits added to the broth become soggy and added another level of texture to every bite, which was somewhat delightful.

Another aspect of this restaurant is the tempura station, where you choose your own tempura items, each clearly priced. There was one tempura item which we noticed that most of the other patrons were ordering. The Japanese Kakiage Tempura, or rather assortment of shredded vegetables. The one which we picked was freshly deep fried, and it was huge and crunchy. At $2 a stake it was quite an enjoyable item to add as a side. The other two tempura skewers we got were chunky chicken karaage and plump deep fried gyoza. Both were nice and what you would expect them to taste like, nothing out of the norm.

At $11.60 for a bowl of Sanuki Beef and Egg Udon, it was slightly on the expensive range base on its portion. Taste was nice and enjoyable, with the assortment of tempura sides to choose from. The service was really friendly and polite, which adds to the pleasant settings of the restaurant.

Hunan Pork Belly at Xiang Xiang Hunan: Crunchy, Spicy, and Lip-Smacking Good

You know a dish is that good when you keep coming back for it. And that’s exactly what happened on our third visit to Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine 湘香湖南菜 —this time at AMK Hub. We already had high expectations from our past experiences, but once again, their Hunan pork belly blew us away. View this post on Instagram A post shared by YumzYumz.com (@yumzyumzsg) What Makes This Hunan Pork Belly Stand Out? First off, let’s talk about the star of the show: their Hunan stir fry pork , made with a heavenly combo of Iberico pork belly and lean pork. It’s a dish that really brings out the spirit of Hunan cooking—bold, fragrant, slightly spicy, and loaded with green pepper aromatics. The pork belly is wonderfully fatty and tender, with that unmistakable richness that Iberico pork is known for. The lean pork adds a nice balance so it doesn’t get overly unctuous. And then there's the rabbit ear fungus. Yes, rabbit ear fungus—also known as Mu Er or Yunnan black fungus . It...

Xiang Di Mi Fen Pasir Panjang Food Centre – Fatty Ipoh Noodles Review

When you think of crispy noodle dishes, most of us immediately picture the classic deep-fried yee mee swimming in luscious egg sauce gravy. But over at  Fatty Ipoh Noodles (肥仔怡保炒粉)  in  Pasir Panjang Food Centre , there’s something different sizzling away on the wok. Enter the  Xiang Di Mi Fen (香底米粉)  – a rare twist that swaps out yee mee for bee hoon, and the results are worth every crunchy bite. View this post on Instagram A post shared by YumzYumz.com (@yumzyumzsg) What makes Xiang Di Mi Fen special? Here’s the magic: instead of sturdy yee mee, the hawker goes with delicate bee hoon. Deep-frying bee hoon isn’t as straightforward – it’s finer, more brittle, and breaks more easily, which means it takes extra skill to get it golden, crispy, and ready to hold up under a blanket of silky gravy. That’s already a show of craft. The glorious egg sauce gravy Once the fried bee hoon hits the plate, it’s doused with a  luxurious egg sauce gravy  that cl...
