Ponggol Nasi Lemak: A Kovan Gem for Fried Chicken Fanatics

Ponggol Nasi Lemak: A Kovan Gem for Fried Chicken Fanatics

If you're a fried chicken fanatic in Kovan, Ponggol Nasi Lemak at the Mee Sek Food Court along Upper Serangoon Road is a must-visit spot. Nestled in the heart of this bustling neighborhood, this hawker stall has garnered quite a reputation for its crispy chicken wings and hearty nasi lemak. Join us as we embark on a culinary adventure at this beloved local joint.

A Hearty Start: Set 1 for $5.20

We kicked off our gastronomic journey with Ponggol Nasi Lemak's Set 1, priced at a wallet-friendly $5.20. This set included a tantalizing chicken wing, a perfectly fried egg, and a generous slice of luncheon meat. Feeling a bit adventurous, we added an otah for an additional $1.70. Just a word of warning: Ponggol Nasi Lemak's queue starts forming even before they open at 4:30 PM, a testament to their enduring popularity.

Nasi Lemak: A Coconut-Infused Delight

As we dug into our plates, the first thing that struck us was the rice. It was a tad tough and dry, unlike the fluffy nasi lemak we had anticipated. However, it was far from flavorless; the coconut flavor shone through, reminding us of the essence of this classic Malay dish.

The chili, on the other hand, was a bit unusual. It had a pasty texture, a departure from the typical runny nasi lemak chili. While it packed a spicy punch, it lacked the expected sweetness that balances the dish. For purists, this might be a letdown, but adventurous spice-lovers might find it intriguing.

Chicken Wing Wonders

Now, let's talk about the star of the show: the chicken wing. Oh boy, it was fabulous! The juicy flesh was imbued with a deep, rich seasoning, and the skin was a crispy, flavorful delight. It's the kind of chicken wing that can make you forget your manners and devour it with gusto.

In a bold move, we ordered an extra chicken drumstick to compare with the wing. The result? It was colossal and juicy, matching the wing in terms of quality and deliciousness. Whether you go for the wing or the drumstick, you're in for a treat.

Know Before You Go

Ponggol Nasi Lemak operates from 4:30 PM to midnight, but do note that they are closed on Thursdays. Chicken wings are a steal at $2 each, while chicken drumsticks come in various sizes and are priced from $3.50 to $4.

In conclusion, Ponggol Nasi Lemak may not have nailed the nasi lemak rice and chili to perfection, but their fried chicken is simply unbeatable. If you're in Kovan and looking for a satisfying meal that won't break the bank, this hawker stall should definitely be on your foodie radar. So, gather your friends, brave the queue, and indulge in some finger-licking goodness at Ponggol Nasi Lemak.

Hunan Pork Belly at Xiang Xiang Hunan: Crunchy, Spicy, and Lip-Smacking Good

You know a dish is that good when you keep coming back for it. And that’s exactly what happened on our third visit to Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine 湘香湖南菜 —this time at AMK Hub. We already had high expectations from our past experiences, but once again, their Hunan pork belly blew us away. View this post on Instagram A post shared by YumzYumz.com (@yumzyumzsg) What Makes This Hunan Pork Belly Stand Out? First off, let’s talk about the star of the show: their Hunan stir fry pork , made with a heavenly combo of Iberico pork belly and lean pork. It’s a dish that really brings out the spirit of Hunan cooking—bold, fragrant, slightly spicy, and loaded with green pepper aromatics. The pork belly is wonderfully fatty and tender, with that unmistakable richness that Iberico pork is known for. The lean pork adds a nice balance so it doesn’t get overly unctuous.
