Crabby Chronicles: Steamed Delights at Kani Doraku Dotonbori

If patience is a virtue, then we just earned our wings at Kani Doraku Dotonbori, the crab haven that boasts the elusive Steamed Crab Bun. In the heart of Dotonbori, where queues are as much a part of the experience as the food itself, we embarked on a journey filled with anticipation, laughter, and one heck of a wait.

Queuing Chronicles: Timing is Everything, Darling!

It's a crabby affair with specific bun batches served at 11:30 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, and 4:30 PM. We thought we were being sly by joining the queue at 3:45 PM, but little did we know we were merely joining the ranks of the crab bun enthusiasts.

Forty-five minutes of banter, camaraderie, and incessant stomach growls later, the clock struck 4:30 PM sharp, and the queue began its serpentine dance towards crab bun heaven. Oh, the suspense!

The Exclusive One-Bun Rule: One Bun to Rule Them All!

In a world where possession is nine-tenths of the law, Kani Doraku Dotonbori takes exclusivity to the next level. Each person is entitled to just one precious steamed crab bun. Call it stingy, call it genius marketing; we call it the great crab bun equalizer.

The Pricy Pleasure: Crabs Worth Their Weight in Yen

At 500 yen a pop, the steamed crab bun better be a gastronomic revelation. Wallets lighter, we dared to dream of a crab-filled utopia as we approached the counter, armed with our hard-earned yen.

Unwrapping the Bun-tastic Surprise: Crabby, Not Crazy

With bated breath, we finally laid eyes on our coveted crab buns. The first bite was a rendezvous with mediocrity. The crab filling, a mishmash of crabby goodness, lacked the wow factor. Minced, yet missing texture, it played second fiddle to the soft, unassuming bun.

Mayo to the Rescue: Mayo Magic

Just when we were about to label our adventure a crabby letdown, salvation came in the form of a small packet of mayonnaise. The addition of this creamy condiment elevated the satisfaction level, rescuing our taste buds from the doldrums of disappointment.

Worth the Wait or Wait for What? Patience Pays, Kind Of

In all honesty, was it worth the wait? Maybe not for the crab filling alone. However, the entire experience, from queuing camaraderie to the mayo-enhanced delight, made it a tale to tell. The steamed crab bun is not just a snack; it's an adventure, a challenge, and a triumph.

Hunan Pork Belly at Xiang Xiang Hunan: Crunchy, Spicy, and Lip-Smacking Good

You know a dish is that good when you keep coming back for it. And that’s exactly what happened on our third visit to Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine 湘香湖南菜 —this time at AMK Hub. We already had high expectations from our past experiences, but once again, their Hunan pork belly blew us away. View this post on Instagram A post shared by YumzYumz.com (@yumzyumzsg) What Makes This Hunan Pork Belly Stand Out? First off, let’s talk about the star of the show: their Hunan stir fry pork , made with a heavenly combo of Iberico pork belly and lean pork. It’s a dish that really brings out the spirit of Hunan cooking—bold, fragrant, slightly spicy, and loaded with green pepper aromatics. The pork belly is wonderfully fatty and tender, with that unmistakable richness that Iberico pork is known for. The lean pork adds a nice balance so it doesn’t get overly unctuous. And then there's the rabbit ear fungus. Yes, rabbit ear fungus—also known as Mu Er or Yunnan black fungus . It...

Xiang Di Mi Fen Pasir Panjang Food Centre – Fatty Ipoh Noodles Review

When you think of crispy noodle dishes, most of us immediately picture the classic deep-fried yee mee swimming in luscious egg sauce gravy. But over at  Fatty Ipoh Noodles (肥仔怡保炒粉)  in  Pasir Panjang Food Centre , there’s something different sizzling away on the wok. Enter the  Xiang Di Mi Fen (香底米粉)  – a rare twist that swaps out yee mee for bee hoon, and the results are worth every crunchy bite. View this post on Instagram A post shared by YumzYumz.com (@yumzyumzsg) What makes Xiang Di Mi Fen special? Here’s the magic: instead of sturdy yee mee, the hawker goes with delicate bee hoon. Deep-frying bee hoon isn’t as straightforward – it’s finer, more brittle, and breaks more easily, which means it takes extra skill to get it golden, crispy, and ready to hold up under a blanket of silky gravy. That’s already a show of craft. The glorious egg sauce gravy Once the fried bee hoon hits the plate, it’s doused with a  luxurious egg sauce gravy  that cl...
